AJ Pope, Ltd. was established in the 1970s by Joseph Pope in the basement of his Austin Boulevard home on Chicago’s West Side.
Currently located in Elmhurst, Illinois, the firm combines an old school approach to accounting, tax, and financial services while embracing how business is conducted in today’s world.
Matthew continues to carry out the vision of his company’s founder, the late Joseph Pope, and his father, late Anthony Pope, who committed to delivering a full range of expertise and support to clients with an honest, knowledgeable, responsible and transparent approach from start to finish.

Matthew is a tax and accounting practitioner specializing in income tax, IRS preparation, and financial + insurance services. He prepares corporate and personal tax returns and offers tax advice. As an Enrolled Agent, he represents clients before the IRS and assists with retirement planning.
Anthony Pope (Late)

As a licensed Certified Public Accountant since 1966 and a practicing attorney since 1977, Anthony was a highly experienced and knowledgeable professional who took pride in offering a fair and honest perspective to his clients.

Matthews' great-grandfather, Joseph Pope (affectionately “Nonno”), emigrated from Avelino, Italy, and started the business in his basement as a small Accounting and Tax practice. His hard work and vision laid the foundation for the firm’s growth into what it is today.

About Matthew Pope
Matthew prepares corporate and personal income tax returns and provides a wide array of tax and accounting advice. As an Enrolled Agent—the highest credential awarded by the Internal Revenue Service—he represents clients before the IRS. He also offers financial and investment guidance, possesses health and life insurance licenses, and assists with retirement planning.
Matthew began his professional career in 1990 as an electrical engineer. Since then, he developed his well-rounded background at companies including Motorola and Hewitt & Associates, working in the areas of engineering, project management, technical sales, and payroll implementation project management.
He joined AJ Pope in 2006 and in 2009, he received his master’s degree in accounting and finance, as well as certification from the IRS as an enrolled agent.
Matthew is a member of the National Association of Tax Professionals (NATP) and a member of the Independent Accountants Association of Illinois (IAAI). Matthew is also a Certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor.
